Ideas for Christmas

Our choir is working on Christmas already. Each year we participate in a stake Christmas “Choirside” where each ward choir in stake presents a Christmas offering. This is the time to share both spiritual music and cultural materials. In the choirside this year, we have decided to present Brent Jorgensen’s Carols of Scandinavia Medley. It is uptempo and contemplative—showing off carols from Sweden and Denmark. We are enjoying this piece.

An older publication has been a real find for our choir: K. Newell Dayley’s I Come Unto My Own is beautiful and powerful at the same time. It tells the Nativity story from the perspective of the Nephites on the western hemisphere. We are using string players from the ward to fill in the organ parts that go along with the piano. If you would like to use our string parts, we’ll make them available free on the internet. Just let me know.

Today in the Editorial Department, we produced Hymnplicity Christmas, Book One and Carols of Germany Medley for download. This morning we finished, finally, Tad Harris’s arrangement of Away in a Manger for Men’s Chorus which we introduced on our demo compact disc this summer. It is being printed now and should be in print by 5 November. It is available for download already at Jackmanmusicexpress.com. This arrangement is very sensible and is written with craft, I think. the arranger Tad Harris lives in Albuquerque.
