With July fast approaching, here we feature a few of our favorite patriotic and Pioneer Day hymn anthems, with seven selections for choir and then two piano and organ arrangements for when the choir is on vacation.

America the beautiful for SATB - cover image

#00290 America the Beautiful/Onward Christian Soldiers – SATB – arranged by A. Laurence Lyon

A beautifully arranged patriotic piece by Laurence Lyon for mixed chorus (sopranos divide during a small descant), congregation, and piano accompaniment.

Beginning simply but gradually enlarging to five-part choir, this anthem applies warm chords and charming accompaniment for a choir searching for something more than a traditional four-part hymn setting. The final verse combines the chorus of “America the Beautiful” with “Onward Christian Soldiers,” sung by the congregation—creating a feeling of unity among all in attendance.

#00527 America the Beautiful/Onward, Christian Soldiers – SA – arranged by Jackie Halversen

Jackie Halversen’s arrangement of the beloved patriotic anthem feels powerful and strong, like an army marching to battle. “America the Beautiful” and “Onward, Christian Soldiers” are intertwined more fully in the two-part choir (men and women voices). Piano accompaniment is dynamic and artistic (yet remains in the key of C and G major), and may be fitting for singers who can hold their own without hearing their parts in the piano.

fire-of-the-covenant

#01565 Fire of the Covenant – SATB – words and music by Shawna Edwards

We can not say enough good things about this original anthem by Shawna Edwards. With stirring text, this piece is perfect for youth choir, with the final verse declaring the words:

“We are the youth of the great and final days.
Armed with truth and a legacy of faith.
And we will rise up and shine the light He gives
And with Saints we will testify: He lives, He lives!”

The piano accompaniment flows well—quite fun for a pianist to play, transitioning from the key of G to E major in the final verse.

This piece may even make you rethink taking a break from choir this summer. View detailed product info, listen to an audio preview, and purchase copies.
