With July fast approaching, here we feature a few of our favorite patriotic and Pioneer Day hymn anthems, with seven selections for choir and then two piano and organ arrangements for when the choir is on vacation.
A beautifully arranged patriotic piece by Laurence Lyon for mixed chorus (sopranos divide during a small descant), congregation, and piano accompaniment.
Beginning simply but gradually enlarging to five-part choir, this anthem applies warm chords and charming accompaniment for a choir searching for something more than a traditional four-part hymn setting. The final verse combines the chorus of “America the Beautiful” with “Onward Christian Soldiers,” sung by the congregation—creating a feeling of unity among all in attendance.
Jackie Halversen’s arrangement of the beloved patriotic anthem feels powerful and strong, like an army marching to battle. “America the Beautiful” and “Onward, Christian Soldiers” are intertwined more fully in the two-part choir (men and women voices). Piano accompaniment is dynamic and artistic (yet remains in the key of C and G major), and may be fitting for singers who can hold their own without hearing their parts in the piano.
Gorgeous, sacred anthem with words and music from the traditional hymn by Samuel Smith. Amber White takes this sacred text and adds original flare and music, making her piece particularly stirring and memorable.
Here is an arrangement of “Faith in Every Footstep” with powerful words and music by K. Newell Dayley arranged in a hymn-like setting by Brent Jorgensen. This simple setting contains warmth and power with its key in A flat major (four flats). The pianist plays right along with the choir.
An ideal setting for Pioneer Day. We bring you the beloved children’s hymn arranged by Laurence Lyon for four-part choir and piano, transitioning from E flat major to E major. Especially suitable for a choir with a strong men’s section. View detailed product info and purchase copies.
A classic hymn arrangement by Mack Wilberg, arranged with a powerful countermelody and solid voicing. May be familiar to some—this arrangement was included on the Mormon Tabernacle Choir album “Spirit of America” and performed in the 2012 Pioneer Day Commemoration Concert by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir.
