Variations on the Star-Spangled Banner for Full Orchestra - Score and Parts
Written in honor of the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, Variations on the Star-Spangled Banner offers a thoughtful orchestral reflection on one of the nation’s most enduring melodies. Set within a classical framework, the work moves beyond the familiar tune, inviting performers and audiences into a journey shaped by struggle, transformation, and ultimate arrival.
Rather than presenting the theme at the outset, the arranger reimagines the traditional Theme and Variations form by reserving the full statement of The Star-Spangled Banner until the end. Seven variations unfold first, each drawing on a range of classical styles and orchestral textures to shape a gradual and purposeful ascent toward the final statement of the anthem.
In this structure, the piece becomes a narrative of unfolding clarity—where independence is not simply declared, but earned through tension, motion, and change. When the familiar melody finally emerges, it arrives with a sense of resolution shaped by all that has led to it, now realized as a moment of resolution and patriotic reflection.
The result is both a concert work and a reflective experience—bringing the beloved anthem into fresh focus through history, process, and the enduring promise of freedom.
